May 1995 was the month the giants admitted they had missed it.
May 26: Bill Gates sends the 'Internet Tidal Wave' memo. Sun launches Java. JavaScript is written in about two weeks.
On May 26, 1995 Bill Gates sent his people a memo titled The Internet Tidal Wave and turned the largest software company on earth ninety degrees in a single page. The same few weeks, Sun released Java, and a Netscape engineer wrote the first JavaScript in about ten days.
Watch the order of events. The tools and the platforms did not arrive first and summon the demand. The demand arrived first, obvious to anyone standing in it, and then even the incumbents scrambled to build for it.
I have never trusted a plan that assumes you can manufacture that wave. You can only notice it early and paddle.
